CREATIVE Friends Series

Welcome to the very first post of our CREATIVA Blog. Here we want to share with you what is happening with our Studio, some tips and tricks from the Creative world, some case studies and more. We are very excited to start with the CREATIVE Friends Series, in which we will feature the talent and creative minds of our Creative latino friends living in New Zealand.

The first one of the series is the Chilean Designer Ninoska Jaramillo, who arrived in Wellington just a year ago and is already displaying her work in the “Repeat, Repeat, Repeat” exhibition in Matchox Studio. Enjoy!

Can you introduce yourself in a paragraph.

I am an Industrial Designer, Chilean, married and mother of Julieta. I love to draw, create and anything with movement: dancing, walking, traveling, watching paint trickles with water on a piece of paper. I feel attracted to photography, I like to photograph details.

Lately I’ve been working with restoration, for me it’s wonderful to see how things are reborn.  Learning moves me. I’m motivated by nature’s details, the human body, its anatomy and its ergonomics.

What brought you to NZ?

I came to New Zealand because my husband was hired by a New Zealand company. Both were keen to visit New Zealand since we met a Kiwi in Chile. He told us wonders of this country, and arriving here we realized that it was no exaggeration.

Tell us about your background in your art/profession.

I discovered I could draw at the age 15 in a boring rainy day, and since then I haven’t stopped. It started as a hobby but at 18 I decided to take it more seriously and I decided to study Industrial Design. I learned, among other things, to communicate through drawing. I also learned to work with different materials: glass, metal, ceramic and my favorite: wood.

When I finished university I worked as a designer in Chile for a few years, first in Concepción and then in Osorno, where I fell in love with natural wool, its textures and colours.

Then I moved to Mexico, living there flooded me with inspiration, it was an eye opener to a torrent of Latin trends, colors, fabrics, symbolisms. That is actually what I try to capture in my work. Just over a year ago I moved to Wellington where I have taken the time to assemble my workshop, paint, draw and create collages.

There is something special that you like about living in Wellington that contributes to your craft / profession.

I feel that art and design is respected and valued. Besides, the diversity of cultures in Wellington makes a very interesting place and generates the existence of a client with different views, reviews and ideologies. There is a wider range of topics with which you can work.

What is your main inspiration?

What inspires me the most is the beauty found in simple things. The beauty of perfection in the lines of nature. Bionics is a very interesting topic to work on Industrial Design, as rescues solutions that occur in nature: structural, mechanical or aesthetic. Observing each and every detail is a great source of inspiration as a designer and artist.

What are your future goals in your art/profession for the next year.

For the next year I intend to implement a small workshop with tools that allow me to work in furniture restoration. I also want to continue painting, drawing and participating in exhibitions. Also I would like to explore deeper into photography.
